A Parent-owned and Parent-controlled business that distributes benefits on the basis of use. Parents are members of the cooperative who have a financial investment in the form of dues. Members have a voice in the operation of the cooperative by exercising a one-member, one-vote policy to elect a board of directors, and receives benefits (better prices, improved instruction and facilities, tax deductible donations, etc.) in proportion to use (level of dance commitment). A cooperative is usually incorporated under a state incorporation law, and therefore is a special corporation, giving member-owners limited liability protection.
